Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded British Gear to Find Local Nationals That Served With Allied Forces, Investigation Is Told
An informant has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology allowing the Taliban to locate Afghans that had served with allied troops.
Information Leak Puts Numerous at Risk
The whistleblower, known as Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the data leak were advised to relocate and alter their phone numbers to protect themselves from the ruling authorities.
Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's management of a serious leak of private information affecting approximately 19k individuals who had asked to come to the UK to escape the regime.
Data Disclosure Occurred
A data file containing their personal data, including names, addresses and in some cases household data, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at special operations center in last year.
The leak became known months later, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on online platforms.

It appears there is this misconception that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that we have,” the whistleblower testified to the committee.
All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they have it. Once they acquire a contact number, they are able to track you down to within metres. This is exactly how intelligence groups achieved.”
When questioned about regarding if authorities had access to necessary encryption, Person A stated: “They have complete capability.”
Impact of the Information Leak
Initial findings submitted to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine relatives and colleagues of Afghans affected by the breach had been murdered.
A legal restriction about the leak was put in force in late 2023 and restricted any information concerning it from public disclosure until mid-2025.
Security Recommendations
Due to legal constraints, Person A and the aid group associated with told individuals at risk they were working with that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been breached”.
“We advised that they relocate where feasible and altered their mobile numbers. That constituted the crucial data that, should militant forces had access to these details, would lead to identification and capture,” Person A explained.
Challenged Assessments
The source contested that an official review conducted by a former official had been incorrect to state that the acquisition of the dataset by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The important fact is that these Afghans are in hiding from the authorities; they remain concealed. The primary issue involves past work history.”
She detailed disturbing violence endured by concerned people, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.
“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to pressure the family to disclose hiding places,” she testified.
