American Military Conducts Lethal Strike in Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
As stated by a high-ranking military official, the US military carried out a fatal kinetic engagement on a boat in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a deadly attack on a craft linked to a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no American forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Actions
This announcement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the American leader alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and other crimes, vowing to escalate the military presence.
Only on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Actions Amidst Pressure
The administration has encountered growing pressure to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, arguing it has prevented drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the bounds of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official seemed to suggest a wider political objective. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's current government.
