Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, such as the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
