Arrangements for Putin-Trump Summit Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russia's Putin "in the near term", a White House official has announced.

This past week the US president indicated he and the Russian president would meet in Hungary's capital soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was due to be held recently - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "needed".

The administration withheld any more details on the reason the negotiations had been delayed.

Earlier Events

The US president had discussed a Hungarian meeting via telephone with Putin, a day before meeting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Certain accounts suggested his meeting with the Ukrainian leader had been a "shouting match", with those familiar claiming Trump had urged him to cede extensive regions of eastern Ukraine as part of a deal with Russia.

Yet, on Monday Trump endorsed a truce plan supported by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the current front line.

"Let it be cut in its current state," he said.

Russia has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "permanent resolution", Russia's foreign minister stated on this week, implying that pausing conflict would merely represent a short-term truce.

Political Perspectives

The "underlying reasons" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat said, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of maximalist demands that involve the acceptance of full Russian sovereignty over the eastern region as well as the military reduction of the country – a non-starter for Ukraine and its EU supporters.

Zelensky said talks regarding the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Moscow was "doing everything" to evade negotiations.

He also said the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "become engaged" was that of the delivery of distance-capable munitions to the Ukrainian military.

Weapons Discussions

The Russian president's unplanned conversation with the US leader last Thursday came ahead of rumors that the US was considering delivering long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine that could possibly hit Russian territory.

Zelensky stated it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to enter into dialogue. The discussion regarding the missiles had emerged as a "valuable contribution" in international relations", he remarked.
