Child of Former South African Head of State Jacob Zuma Refutes Terrorism Charges as Trial Commences
The child of previous South African President Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related accusations at the commencement of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over statements she posted on online platforms several years back during deadly unrest in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the arrest of her parent.
A week of chaos in several parts of the country in July 2021, including looting and arson, resulted in at least three hundred deceased and resulted in damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).
Zuma-Sambudla has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and faces accusations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public violence.
Context of the Proceedings
The unrest were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the previous president's arrest for ignoring a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into accusations of corruption while he was holding office.
The defendant has always refuted the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier labelling the state's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also consistently stated the accusations against her were an effort to resolve political disputes with her father after he started his own party and competed against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was supported by the foundation, which said the case was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "political and family-related harassment" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of backers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks substantial proof for a conviction.
