New Year's Partygoers Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Expected Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a frosty commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are expected to proceed, unlike last year's postponement. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be essential," noted the national forecaster.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks displays, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are due to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, as per forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, advisories are active across Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and most of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on the transport network.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Medical Alerts Issued
At the same time, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency stated this meant the weather could to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
