New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” the coach said. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and he’s talking that way.”

NYPD issued security footage earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries were reported.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse just had a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he is a regular at our matches. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
