Cameron Norrie earned the biggest win of his professional journey by coming back from a early deficit to defeat top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the early stage of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this win signifies Norrie's maiden success over a reigning world No 1.

"Huge. Extremely important for me," commented Norrie, who is now the latest British man in the record books to overcome a world No 1. "Bouncing back from a physical setback last year, I lost in the opening stage of qualifying rounds here. I just sought to embrace my performance in the second half of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the biggest success of my tennis journey, my maiden triumph over the top player and likely the strongest player in the sport right now."

Norrie, positioned No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive premier event wins, which was the top run of performances in the Spanish star's young career.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to success early on as he cruised in the initial stanza. However, Norrie steadily fought his way into the match by serving with sharper placement and pulling the Spaniard into extended, grueling rallies. His persistent steadiness and consistency slowly took its toll.

Through most of the battle, the world number one served well but he found it challenging to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old looked especially uneasy striking his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the game for most of this year, committing 29 forehand unforced errors and a overall of 54 unforced errors.
