Prison Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He fought the law and justice won.

Two months following receiving a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “annihilate” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears jail-bound.

Imminent Imprisonment

The found-guilty instigator – who had been subject to home confinement in his estate while a set of legal procedures and petitions play out – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, during increasing speculation that he will be moved to a notorious top-security penitentiary.

Past Remarks on Inmates

Throughout Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the conservative former military man displayed minimal sympathy for the country's inmates.

“Why should we provide these scoundrels a good life?” he previously wondered. “They ought to simply be messed, period. That's my view.”

In another instance, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up in prison, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Jail Destination Discussion

However the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, several of whom this week visited the complex in an apparent effort to dissuade the high court from banishing him there.

Senator Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s allied group who was among that group, claimed he predicted the 70-year-old politician to be imprisoned in the following week and a half and feared his destination could be Papuda.

The senator argued Bolsonaro’s acute gut problems – the consequence of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential election race – meant it would be risky to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is highly critical. He won’t be able to handle it if they move him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing forty detainees: “That is virtually one square metre per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they protest, of course, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the only voice voicing opinions prior to the ex-leader's anticipated incarceration.

Writing in a leading newspaper, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its past”.

“It is an wrong that gnaws the souls of countless Brazilian citizens,” the former minister said.

Varied General Response

That may be accurate given the substantial backing Bolsonaro maintains on the right-wing. Yet his predicted jailing has also warmed the hearts of many others who think he ought to be imprisoned for plotting to prevent the elected leader from becoming president – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

The lawmaker, a politician for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, commented: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. No one wants Bolsonaro to be put in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro to go hungry or for him to have to lie on concrete. We desire him to receive dignified care – but proper treatment while incarcerated. He can’t persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have for a long time celebrating the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly woken up to their entitlements. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always claimed that civil liberties were not for criminals – decided to inspect a prison to discover what conditions are really like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, insulting handling”.

Likely Jail Facilities

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which now holds about thousands of detainees, his probable location looks to be a nearby penitentiary for police officers and other “special” inmates called Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning presidential palace, approximately 12 miles away.

According to sources, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – roughly the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a shower and a 12 square meter balcony. “Bolsonaro would be permitted to have a television and also a cooler in his cell as long as they were supplied by his family,” sources suggested.

Ideological Comments

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about proposal to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will rule on his outcome in the {
