Last year, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a new film. The movie, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version promoted by official channels that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment rather than a critique.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure version of the president. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series released last October, helmed by a Kremlin supporter. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “save” Russia from chaos. Although the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to subvert the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the focus to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, seeking permanent power.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. Historically, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one actually pleaded with Putin to take the job. The position was in essence a casting call with many candidates. Central to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the country de facto.

• His list included various figures, including an opposition leader subsequently assassinated and a security service director.
• According to a journalist who researched Putin’s biography, the future president simply fitted the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A property developer familiar with the events said the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength.

Building the 007 Persona

Experts agree that the image of Putin as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not engaged in actual agent work.

Curiously, the move to framing him as a “007” could partly have been triggered by Daniel Craig’s arrival as 007. His harder interpretation led Russian media and social media to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images swapping the actor's likeness with Putin’s surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with viewers there, the Kremlin will not miss the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the political rivals, or prominent activists from its narrative, despite covering the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who remains unseen directly. His influence is signaled through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
