The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

A minimum of 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were admitted to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father-of-five, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, a senior official expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still under care, with several in a critical state. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
