The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for nearly all New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm this decision right away following his victory in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside inside me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Campaign Controversy

During his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his rivals, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the rent-stabilized unit although he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his three terms, which ended in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.

With its pale yellow exterior, emerald shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "No matter what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
